SMS or RCS?
The announced successor, and why SMS remains unavoidable.
RCS, for Rich Communication Services, is the format meant to replace SMS: long messages, images, read and typing indicators. Its availability depends on the handset, the operator and the country, whereas SMS has worked everywhere, on any device, since the 1990s.
Point-by-point comparison
| Criterion | SMS | RCS |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Universal, on any mobile phone | Depends on the model, the operator and the country |
| Content | 160 characters of text | Long text, images, buttons, carousels |
| Read receipts | Not part of the format | Supported natively |
| Connection | Mobile network alone, no data needed | A data connection is essential |
| Automatic fallback | Not applicable: it is already the common baseline | Falls back to SMS when RCS is unavailable |
In short: which should you pick?
RCS wins whenever the content needs to be rich and you know the recipient is equipped for it. SMS remains the only format whose delivery you can count on knowing nothing about the phone at the other end — which is precisely why RCS itself falls back to it.
