Understanding French numbering
What a number tells you — and above all what it no longer tells you — about its holder and their operator.
The French numbering plan is managed by ARCEP, the telecoms regulator. It defines what each prefix means, and it is against those rules that the sending form validates a number. These pages set out what a number lets you infer, and the common shortcuts that no longer hold.
The point to remember
Since number portability came into force, a prefix no longer reveals a number's operator: any 06 or 07 can belong to any network. That is why this service never asks for the recipient's operator.
