A delivery report, or DLR, is the notification returned by the network stating whether an SMS was delivered to the recipient's handset.

In detail

The delivery report is issued by the network back to the sender to signal the outcome of delivery: delivered, pending, or failed.

Its exact scope matters: a DLR confirms the message reached the device, not that it was read or understood. It is transport information, never a read receipt.
