In detail
MMS extends SMS to multimedia content: a photo, audio, video, or simply a longer text. Unlike SMS, it does not travel over signalling channels but over a data connection.
That difference has practical consequences: an MMS needs an active data connection and correct handset settings, it is usually billed differently, and its size is capped by the operator, often at a few hundred kilobytes.
