RCS

RCS brings to the phone's native messaging the features people know from messaging apps: read receipts, a "typing" indicator, large file transfers and richer group chats.

Unlike SMS, RCS needs a data connection and support on both sides: from the handset, the messaging app and the operator. When any of those is missing, the conversation automatically falls back to SMS — which is why SMS remains the universal lowest common denominator.
