Definition

An OTP (One-Time Password) is a single-use, short-lived code sent by SMS to validate a login or a transaction.

In detail

An OTP is a code valid only once and only for a few minutes. Sent by SMS, it is the most widespread second authentication factor, because it requires no installation from the recipient.

Its popularity should not hide its weaknesses: SMS is not end-to-end encrypted and remains exposed to SIM swapping and phishing. An OTP code must never be shared with anyone, including someone claiming to be an adviser.
