Number portability

Portability guarantees that a subscriber can switch operator without losing their number. It is a major win for competition, but it has a technical consequence that is often overlooked.

Since a number may have moved network several times, its prefix no longer tells you which operator serves it today. That is why an SMS sending service never asks for the recipient's operator: routing is resolved automatically from the number alone.
