A short code is a number of only a few digits, reserved for services and used in particular for opt-outs and spam reporting.

In detail

Short codes have four to six digits instead of ten. They are allocated to services rather than individuals, and are used both to receive replies and to send service messages.

In France they structure the professional SMS ecosystem: a short code lets the recipient reply STOP to opt out, and 33700 is the national service for reporting unwanted SMS.
