Best practices

SMS rarely fits for someone close

For a close friend or a family member, a call or a visit is still expected. SMS finds its place elsewhere: a colleague, an acquaintance, someone you do not want to intrude on right away. It can also precede a call, to say that you are there.

What is better left unwritten

Avoid "I know how you feel", which is never true, and any phrasing that looks for meaning in the loss. Avoid "don't hesitate to ask" too: a grieving person does not ask. Offer something specific, or simply say you are there.
