Best practices
Do not ask for news
"How are you doing?" obliges a reply, and an account of it. A wording that expects nothing — "thinking of you, don't reply" — relieves rather than adds a task.
Offer something concrete or nothing
A vague offer of help goes nowhere. Offer one specific thing you can genuinely do: shopping, a lift, watching the children. Otherwise, simply being there is enough.
